The flames are roaring once again as fire consumes the forest of the Mogollon Rim south of Flagstaff. The Pocket Fire is located just below East Pocket Knob and the primitive campground called End of the World. Located on the Knob is East Pocket Lookout Fire. The lookout would most likely have been the first to spot the curl of smoke rising above the rim. The Forest Service doesn’t want their lookouts at risk so I believe she has been evacuated to safety. When time allows, the Forest Service wraps these historic structures to protect them from the flames. East Pocket is an 80 -foot wooden tower built in 1943. Sturdy wood beams support the live-in cabin with three fights of stairs that lead to an open deck. We visited the lookout last year and she shared her photo taken from a bird’s eye view of the rim at sunset. Here’s hoping that the fire fighters will win their battle against the flames and preserve the tower.
